new hostel
Hello all,
I am Maria, from Portugal. I'm on the last year of a three year Hotel Management course at the University and my final project, due in July, is the development of a hotel unit. I chose a Hostel to be my project although is not yet regulated by law in this country. The city where I'm (virtually) installing it is Aveiro, a small city in the centre of Portugal (http://www.cm-aveiro.pt/) that has a university and lots of young people. It will be in downtown where the bars and restaurants are and bordering a canal (Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal) and it will have 3 dorms with a total of 16 beds. I have sent emails to owners of Hostels in Lisbon for some help but I didn’t get any answer so I am asking you if there are things that I should consider for the project. Any help is welcome. Thank you.

Hello Maria and Hostels,
How big is the house/apartment and how many beds has each dorm?
Are you thinking to have a kind of social room or something like that?
Waht about toilets, how many are you thinking about?
How many Hostels has your city?
Cheers all

Hello, I am enclosing the architecture plans so you can have an idea. This is just a project for school, not a real hostel. The city doesn't have any hostel. It will have 3 rooms, one with 4 beds (bunk) and the other two with 6 bunk beds to a total of 16 beds in the 3 rooms... is it too much? The social room is on the ground floor, as is the kitchen and reception, and on the first floor are only rooms and wc's ans on the the last floor is a room and a terrace. The house has entries through 2 streets and the front borders a river canal.
Thanks

It seems that in one of the 3 bunk beds dorm you won't have to much natural light, as you have one bunk bed on the window...
Is that a "real" house?
So if there is no hostels in your city, why not implement your plan?

That is a real house, it's an old one and belongs to a friend, I just picked it to be my project because I really love the location. The reason why I don't implement this plan is because I don't have $$$ to do that.
Your right about the light, I will try to put those ceiling windows on the last floor, it can give some extra light but on the other dorms there's not much I can do...

Is very beautiful, yes...
How do you think to step over with the non regulating laws about Hostels in Portugal.
I was checking on Hostelworld and it seems there is a gesthouse in your city, already...

I will ask to be classified as 'local lodging' which is a 'minor' type of lodging, where the licences are given by the town mayor, while in hotels the licence is given by the Tourism of Portugal.
There is indeed a Youth Pousada in Aveiro, just checked, but it doesn't provide breakfast and you have to have a youth pousadas card to be accepted and they usually have curfews, not sure if this one has but will check it, I might even go there. When I make my SWOT analisys (strenghts, weaknesses, Oportunities and Threats) I will keep in mind that place.

Yes, that youth hostel also... But actually, I was speaking about this:

;)
Good luck with your SWOT analysis
