Come volunteer at the beautiful Fauzi Azar Inn (Nazareth)!
Take a unique opportunity to immerse in the local culture in Nazareth and experience the beautiful historical city as an insider! We are looking for independent, curious travelers who have 6-10 weeks on their hands and would like to really get to know the north of Israel and Arab culture.
The Fauzi Azar Inn is a gorgeous two century old stone house located in the heart of Nazareth, the largest city in the mountainous Galilee region of northern Israel. The city population is made up predominantly of Christians and Muslims with a Jewish community in Upper Nazareth. The inn itself is situated in the heart of the Souq (market) Quarter of the Old City, next to the vegetable market and only a few minutes from a host of restaurants and coffee shops. All of Nazareth's major sites, including the Basilica of the Annunciation, the White Mosque, and St. Gabriel's Church are only minutes by foot. Wandering through the narrow streets of the Old City is a delight in itself and both the Fauzi and other vantage points nearby afford wonderful panoramic views of Nazareth.
The Fauzi Azar Inn was chosen by Lonely Planet as #7 hostel in the world for 2014 and described by the Lonely Planet Travel Guide "one of the highlights of a stay in the Galilee" and "a great base for touring major sites of the Galilee."
About the Volunteer Program
The Fauzi Azar Inn promotes ecotourism in Nazareth and works with the community to contribute to its development in various areas. The inn uses local resources to create new employment opportunities, to raise the self-image of the local community, and to encourage economic growth while maintaining the universal values of natural and cultural preservation. The aim is to introduce in Nazareth, which is the largest Arab city in Israel, a new model of tourism and thus "bridge the gap" between Arabs and Jews. At the same time, the inn is creating a model for increased tourism along the Israel National Trail (Shvil Israel) and the recently completed Jesus Trail in order to promote both and the corresponding economic potential.
The volunteers at the Fauzi Azar Inn are an integral part of the staff and contributing to the special atmosphere of the inn. Volunteering at the Fauzi is an opportunity to experience a life in this unique city, be part of the local community, interact with people from very different backgrounds and contribute to the inn's goals.
Among the other things, volunteers will be involved in hosting the guests, helping with breakfast, planning and running the evening social events and assisting with housekeeping. Volunteers will also be encouraged to help with other projects - no matter what your skills and talents, there will be some way they can be used to benefit the Fauzi Azar Inn.
What's Included?
The volunteers get a bed in a shared room (mixed dorms) with private toilet & shower, free breakfast, free WiFi, free laundry once a week and much more. We encourage our volunteers to go on our tours which they get for free (based on availability) and also to stay in other hostels around Israel, most of them for free or with a major discount.
Requirements for Volunteers:
* Age 21 - 40
* A 6-9 week commitment. During that time, volunteers will work 5 times a week for 5-6 hours at a time
* Good level of English
* Experienced travellers who have stayed in several hostels before
In order to register for the program we take a 100usd fee as a guarantee for being serious about your commitment. The total value of your stay and free tours is well beyond this amount (you are only required to pay this fee if your application is successful and you are chosen for the program).
