The Sitka International Hostel... the only hostel and budget accommodation in Sitka Alaska is looking for 'houseparents' to begin a work exchange at the end of May or beginning of June 2014 (through August). The Sitka hostel provides an ideal way to enjoy a South East Alaskan summer on a budget or as a slow and easy transition for becoming a long term member of this exquisite community. The Sitka Hostel is a 30 year old non-profit organization which is run completely by volunteer support (from our community and beyond) out of an historic building very close to downtown. We like to call our volunteers 'houseparents' as we are the caretakers of this old building and of our many different guests.
The Sitka Hostel offers its 'houseparents' free (on site) accommodation, as well as a living stipend of $150 dollars per month (in the form of a gift card from the local supermarket). In exchange we expect the 'houseparent' to share a designated number of the 14 morning and night shifts in which we are open for guests (the hostel is completely closed between 10am and 6pm every day in part so our 'houseparents' are free to work part time jobs/volunteer positions and enjoy the wonders of Sitka). Typical hostel/hospitality responsibilities are expected during these shifts such as: Laundry, Housekeeping, Registration and Hosting guests. The specific number of expected shifts is dependent on living quarters (ie. a three bed dorm vs a private room) and usually ranges from 16-26 hrs per week depending on guest turnover.

A Not for Profit Organization run out of the Historic Tillie Paul Manor (c.1926), makes affordable accommodation and the hostelling experience available for travelers to the beautiful town of Sitka in South East Alaska. Located four blocks from downtown’s Crescent Harbor, the hostel features 23 available beds in five different dormitories, as well as, one private double bed and bathroom. Travelers should expect a uniquely cozy and friendly hostelling experience. Sitka Hostel also offers single gender dormitories with on suite bathroom facilities, towel rental, on-site laundry, locally roasted coffee, two separate kitchen facilities, tourist information and an extensive library/book exchange. In order for us to maintain the lowest possible rates and for our volunteer staff to make it work, the hostel is locked up each day at 10am and reopens each evening at 6pm; quiet hours begin at 10pm and there is an 11pm curfew.
