For the past 12 years I have had a charity box next to the till. Whenever someone says "Keep the change" the money always goes into the box.
Last season we raised 440 Euro which was split between the local cats and dogs rescue group and the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. We now have adopted a sea turtle named Anemi.

Actually I am thinking to do the same on my Hostel, we can help an instituion or a local ONG...
I will also provide free internet and WIFI and I am thinking to put a small box (or something like that) near the computers space with a kind of message saying that internet is free but if people want to put a coin in the box, that money will be used to suport a local instituion... What do you think about this?

I think people are more willing to help local charities when they are on holiday and hostels really should do their bit to help.

Here's another example -- a Barcelona hostel that encourages people to donate their key deposit to charity on checkout.
The blank key card (which also opens the front door and locker) is sandwiched between a paper that lists room number, and the card that encourages guests to donate the key deposit.
(I hope the hostel doesn't mind my posting this photo...)
