I've recently moved to Shanghai from the US and will remain here for the next couple of years learning mandarin/potentially opening a hostel in China. I realize owning/operating a hostel in China, for a foreigner, can be especially difficult. I'm hoping you guys can help me get in touch with hostel owners, particularly foreign hostel owners in China. If you guys know of such hostels, I'd appreciate any and all information. Thanks!

I would look up hostels on the booking engine websites and make a list of their names. Then find their websites with a search engine and contact them. There are some Chinese hostels registered here, but I don't know how often they check the forum...

I remember there was a place in Lijian that was foreign owned. I can't remember the name of the place, although I have a feeling he was from Australia or NZ.
My suggestion would be to get out of the main cities and look for something where property prices might be a little cheaper. I don't believe foreigners can even own land, so you might have to do with leasing a place.

I am Chinese. In China even many hotels in downtown like super 8 or days inn are pricing from 20 to 30 USD with a not bad quality. So local hotels have to price the same or lower than them. I used to travel across China and saw many hostel run well. The core competence of Chinese hostels, i think, is just being able to gather young people and share backpacker informations.

I think a very famous hostel in Chengdu is owned by a Singaporean Chinese guy, it's very well-managed. I heard it's rented place. high ratings. I was there in early 2007, January I think.
