Hi Flash,
If you’re not going to take them straight to their rooms, then ask them to drop their bags before you start your check-in procedure. They don’t know how long you’ll keep them there, so many people will keep their heavy packs on. If they have to stand around and fill out forms or wait for you to copy their passport information, invite them to take a load off. They’ll be so much more relaxed and receptive to anything you have to tell them.
Whether or not to ask for a key deposit is up to you. If your keys are expensive or a pain in the butt to have made, then charge the deposit. If not, then I wouldn’t worry about it unless lost keys become a big issue after you open.
When your guests first arrive you can introduce yourself to them, but they probably won’t remember your name. Introduce yourself again after the check-in so they’ll be more likely to remember it. If they know your name, then you become a real person that they can connect with instead of just “the receptionist.”
Good luck with the opening!!
