Heya to you all from Berlin :)
So, let's jump stright in ;) - Im 28 and since at least 5 years that idea of opening my own hostel have been bugging me. Have been traveling quite a bit and have been working in hostels myself, too. 1 year as receptionist and second manager, then in another hostel/ another country- 2 years as bartender. And have been studying business administration, if that will turn out to be any help in real business life, i will be just all smiley and happy :D
well, the crazy part of opening my own first (in hostel's chain :D ) hostel is- I want to do it in Berlin. And that's the point where it will get extreme I suppose, with 80-something concurrents... too bad not much to change 'cause after 3 years living here i realized i lost my hear to this crazy city and we are getting along very well so i want to stay.
Me and my partner- together we have enought capital to get nice solid bag of money from bank. For sure we dont wanna create another "place to sleep cheap", those Berlin have more than enought. We are dreaming about hostel with strong character and unique face.
after sneaking around forum posts here and getting first picture of "who is who and how", i suppose Santa Klaus will be more careful with giving advices to me ;) at least he is the only one I spotted from big B. But can I ask- anybody else from Berlin? Anybody have experience with German byrocracy while creating hostel? Any underwater stones I should be aware of (in legal terms)?
And actually I would be happy about any thoughts on topic "Another hostel in Berlin?! are you nuts?!" :D will work? will not?
Cheers and happy productive day to all

Hahahaha!
What´s "big B" supposed to be anyway? Big Brother? Big Bollocks? :D
It can´t be "Big Business" obviously. We´re not big. We got bigger than I suspected when I started here 10 years ago, but I´m still not doing this job for getting a huge bonus every year. I do it because it gives me the power to do things which I think are the right thing to do. And because I like hostels.
So, here is my advice: go for a location in Köpenick or Spandau. It´s so lovely out there! :D
Seriously: don´t let anyone tell you there are too many hostels in Berlin already. There are only too many bad ones.

welcome :)
i'm living and working in berlin as well. as i (unfortunately) don't own a hostel but just work there i don't know much about all the bureaucracy.
i think it's quite a challenge to open another place in this city, but if it's done well it should work, as the example of the grand hostel shows.
i thought that this year would be the time when a couple of hostels are going to close, but except for the first meininger (which, as some rumors say, will remain under a different management ) that's not happening as far as i know.
anyway, if you need any help, just ask :D
