hi there, irish guy here... currently living in china.
currently enjoying a 2 year career break... back to the desk job in 2012.. unless i can open a kick a$$ hostel!
stumbled across this site, and have to say... it's a fantastic resource... i had a dream of running a hostel years back... i've some time on my hands... a little capital... and now a load of info.
so, i hope to get to know you guys and learn from you.

i'm thinking somewhere close enough to home to begin with, east europe... or possibly even croatia.....

I can give an opinion on places in Croatia that need a hostel. But I understand that for a foreigner to buy a property in Croatia can be a nightmare.

Croatia:
The most important need is Plitvice National Park. Currently there are plenty of rooms to let, but several km from the park entrance and expensive for single travellers.
Rovinj in Istria in the north has no hostel. It's a beautiful town with lots of beaches.
Dubrovnik has a new pleasant hostel excellently situtated in the old town, but it's small and I'm sure there's room for more.

So, the Hostel is in Bled, Slovenia, not slovakia, lol. I will contact my friend, and see what the current situation is with the Hostel.

Any news on new hostel in Slovenia? Croatia? is language a problem to manage or hire people, or English is ok in those places? How is China for Weston and Irish guy?
