Have you gotten any replies yet? Are you only looking for replies from hostel managers or other positions at hostels?
Hello! My name is Marissa and I am a Travel and Tourism student at G.C.C. in Batavia, New York. After I graduate- I would like to open up my own hostel. I found this site because I was looking to conduct a short interview with an industry professional as part of my final project for school. I've had the hardest time getting anyone to talk with me! When I found this website I was excited to see how helpful and friendly everyone is and I hoped to find someone to talk to. That being said- I was wondering if anyone would like to help me by answering 5 or so questions. In return your hostel will get free promotion through my report and presentation. Any information/ tips would be beneficial!
What is it that you find most difficult about the business?
What kind of skills or personal attributes does the job require?
What type of training or education does one need to get into the field?
What are some of the required daily tasks?
What kind of permits do you need to operate?

I have not gotten any feed back as of yet. I had gotten one phone call in response to one of the many (many) emails I sent out. I still need a little more help on permits/ zoning and such. Any advice from anyone in the industry is always going to be helpful. I'm not just doing the report for school- I want to learn as much as I can about the business so that I can start my own hostel someday. This website has been very helpful. I'm so glad that I found it.

Hi Marissa, I had almost that same assignment for my Intro to Hospitality class! It is true what you say that some GM's will not reply not matter the length of time, I know from experience. There is a lot of transferable knowledge from Hotels to Hostels so I would recommend joining AH&LA.
Good luck
Patrick
