Hey guys!! I recently got back to the states after traveling a small portion of Europe. I snowboarded Norway for 2 weeks from Oslo to Bergen, backpacked Scotland for 2 1/2 weeks and spent a few days in Iceland. In these travels I was offered positions at 2 hostels in Scotland and completely regret not taking them. I am currently back to slaving away for enough money for any ticket and sell EVERYTHING and go... anywhere. I absolutely loved the experience conversing with the locals and travelers along with the ambience of different environments.

I joined this forum after reading posting after posting after posting and now wanting to be a part of this community. I don't have any experience working in a hostel but do have numerous years of customer service in many different types of situations. All ranging from emergency room to elevator music... I am an adventurous, outgoing, peaceful, kind, knowledgeable, fast-learning, hard working young man. I can do almost any type of work and it doesn't bother me (I've probably done worse). I'm looking at Autumn time frame hopefully somewhere in Europe. From what research I've done already it looks like Americans have to apply to individual countries for a work visa(which I am not experienced with). Any info or tips on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated. To all possible employers I am extremely flexible and can work for however long you need me. I don't have any experience working in a hostel but do have numerous years of customer service in many different types of situations... It might be difficult to get a work holiday visa in Europe. (See here -- US is excluded from most countries)
I believe a regular work visa typically require sponsorship by a company which they probably won't do unless you have experience.

It would probably be easier to find a position in exchange for room and board -- or try places like USA, Australia or New Zealand (which seem to offer WHVs for people from the US). New Zealand wants new immigrants. If you're interested in New Zealand, I recommend signing up for their Department of Labour newsletter :)

Thank you very much for the info... I have been looking into the New Zealand WHV and am very interested in that as well. I guess there is just too much to see and experience in this world and cant decide where to start. I was pondering the "work for room and board" like what I got offered in Scotland and then apply for a work visa in the respective country. Hopefully that could possibly work out.

When I stayed in Inverness, Scotland for a week or so I became good friends with an Italian and a Spaniard that have traveling for 8 years and run that hostel there. Hearing what they've been through I would trade for all my dormant time in the states. Quite inspiring lifestyle... "forever young" they always said. I guess I'll keep wading through the postings until I find something that seems feasible for an American citizen to accomplish. Thanks again...
