Looking at starting a hostel in NYC need some advice
Hi there
i'm looking at starting a hostel either here in NYC or back home in Melbourne Australia.
Looking for anyone that is willing to chat with me about their day-to-day, how they organise themselves so that they are able to get everything they need done in a timely and efficient manner. Any advice and/or help would be welcome.
thanks josephine

Hostels in NYC are illegal up till now, there's an occupancy law that forbids to have more than 3 unrelated people to share a room for less than 30 days period. The hostels that are opened have got their permits before bloomberg put that law in place,as right now no chance of opening a hostel. With only 3 beds per room it's impossible to generate profits with Nyc rentals unless you have a high end target market but then it won't be a hostel. I'm telling you this cause we had a small guesthouse there for 1 year and we realized it didn't make any sense financially, besides taking into account issue with neighbors etc.etc.
No idea about Melbourne,it might be way easier.

Sadly Hostelsintheworld is correct about hostels in NYC being illegal to run. Some legislation was proposed that would allow hostels to exist, but it was written so that only very large corporate hostels with huge funding behind them could ever meet the requirements. The proposal was not accepted, so hostels are still illegal.
As I understand it, HI New York was allowed to operate when all other hostels in the city were closed down because it is a non-profit organization. If you wanted to start a new hostel as a non-profit as well, then perhaps that could be a possibility. You would definitely need to speak with a lawyer in the area to see if/how that could work.
If you decide to follow up on that idea, I would love to hear what the lawyer has to say about it.
