New Hostel in NS
Hey folks, great spot you have here, looks like a lot of good info. I'm trying to open a hostel in Nova Scotia, Canada and am currently in the midst of preparing my business plan. I already own the property, the zoning is set and the house is perfect for what I have in mind, so I'm hoping that I might be on the right track. I have some cash of my own to start with but am also researching a variety of loan options. I'm going to check out everything you have here and can see already that you have tons of info on starting new hostels. But at the same time, if anyone wants to volunteer some wisdom, by all means, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping to open in May, that is as long as I can get my hands on a bit of financing. Surfing has really taken off in the area so I'm hoping to be open in time for the start of the beach season next Spring. On another note, I've heard of some hostels refusing outside bedding; insisting that guests use linen that is provided. I haven't stayed in a proper hostel for five years, but as far as I can remember the use of personal sleeping bags was pretty much the norm. Are there real hygiene considerations that should be considered here? The excessive use of laundry detergent is deterring me from heading in that direction.

Just a note that the title of this thread meant absolutely nothing to me. Not until I got into your second sentence did I realise where the hostel was going to be.
YHA hostels used to encourage everyone to bring a sheet sleeping-bag (not a full sleeping bag) designed in such a way that it stopped you having contact with the blankets/duvet and pillow. Now, they invariably provide a modern version of the same-design sleeping bag, or else a pair of sheets. Probably, as in all other social activities, there's probably government rules that force them to do this. In Britain, bunkhouses (simple hostels) sometimes provide only mattress and pillow, and expect you to bring a full sleeping bag or equivalent.

The reason they do that is to reduce the chances of guests bringing in bedbugs...
