I am considering buying an old building , renovating it and opening hostel in Portugal.
Just to introduce myself, I have been born in Poland but have lived in USA for many years, first 10 years in San Francisco now 10 years in Hawaii.
I am considering moving to Portugal with my wife and my daughter.
I have been in construction business here in USA for many years but understand starting new projects in a new country will be a challenge.
I still would like to buy an old building and renovate it , not because I love it :-) but I know in the long run with my experience this is effort very well spent.
I am a kitesurfer and a surfer, ideally I would like to live no farther than 50km from Peniche and no more than 50km from Lisbon.
I dont think I can afford Lisbon.
I speak Spanish, I am learning Portuguese :-) very slowly Haha
I have been doing research about permits and other details.
I would appreciate very much if you can spend some time and advise what to expect.If you do not have detailed info about Portugal that's OK, any advise is great. :-)
I am planning to sell my condo here in USA where I live, this is a big move and great change not only for me by my family.
We have been very fortunate to be able to live on the island of Oahu, Hawaii , which is very nice place to live but I have moved many times in my life and feel next move will awake my soul again.
Hawaii is extremely expensive and vacation rentals are not permitted. Airbnb is illegal, a lot of people do it but mostly just one room in your own house which is still illegal, local people are very much against is.

my name is Leah, I also used to live in hawaii. My husband is from portugal and we live here now. We are in between portugal , or nicaragua on where we would like to settle, or even possibly both places 6months/6 months. Weve had a dream to have our own lodge, B&B for a long time now. As we recently moved back to portugal since being away for 3 years, the prices have went sky rocket. Also, AIRBNB as you mentioned, is now controled by the government and you have a lot of more taxes to pay, pus the locals also hate it because its been kicking them out of their homes and aking rent go sky rocket.
Anyhow, we are still looking around and are very aware of the rules and regulations here. If you would ever like to chat, or possible fix something out together, send us a message.
