The YHA office in Michigan is closing:
The venerable American Youth Hostel office on Coolidge Highway — the only hostelling center in Michigan — is closing its doors this weekend.
Unable to pay utility bills, the non-profit travel group is becoming an Internet-only operation.
"We just found that it was financially difficult to maintain it," said Martha Spear, secretary of Hostelling International, Michigan Chapter. "But they've been there 40 years and it's chock full of stuff."
The Berkley center was an office without housing, but Spear said they sold travel goods like hostelling memberships, European rail passes, international student ID cards, and international maps. The office also directed international travelers to cheap, clean places to stay in metro Detroit and helped local travelers arrange international trips. There has not been an actual hostel in metro Detroit for many years, Spear said.
Visit the HI Michigan Web site for the latest information.
NOTE: Apparently there are no hostels in Detroit, or anywhere in Michigan except for one hostel called theAdventurer's Lodge, located in Lake Ann, Michigan.
