Australia wants to minimize the use of the word backpacker:
"Tourism operators are moving to minimise the use of the term backpacker, with its cheap, young and drunken connotations, in a bid to increase visitor numbers and maintain their market.
As the term backpacker loses popularity, the brands "independent traveller", "youth traveller" and "adventure tourist" are gaining currency in Australia's $4.5 billion industry...
But Brisbane-based Blue Tongue Backpackers and Tours manager Doug Power said there were different segments of the market but he would not be changing the name as his clientele, mainly 18 to 30-year-olds from Europe and the UK, were 'most definitely backpackers'.
'These guys will eat two dollar noodles and spend $100 on booze,' he said."
