I just took a look at HostelTraveler.com, which offers bookings for a variety of accommodations, of which only some appear to be hostels. Looking around the site at random, my eye fell on "Youth Hostel Uni Hotel" in Maribor, Slovenia. This seems to be in every respect a hotel and in no respect a Youth Hostel, except only that they charge the same for a single traveller as for one of a group. That charge is 26 € without breakfast, which seems considerably more than a hostel charge. There is no mention of a common room or self-catering kitchen, and a single traveller would be ensconced lonely in his room-of-2-beds. We have discussed elsewhere on this forum how establishments seem to want to call themselves 'hostel' to attract a greater range of customers.

I would really like to see a response to this from hosteltraveler.com. I getting a little tired of hotels riding on hostels marketing ingenuity and rising popularity in many markets.

Where is HostelTraveler.com based? Is it New York State?
Yes, HostelTraveler.com is based in New York, and has offices in New York and Florida.
Readers may be interested to note that HostelTraveler can be distinguished from almost all other services in this market, which are based in Europe and elsewhere. Since HostelTraveler is based in the United States, we can offer some unique services that the others are simply unable to provide due to domicile. An example of this is the credit / debit card collection service HostelTraveler provides to it's hostel clients in countries around the world. In many regions, lodgings are unable to access credit card capabilities at all, and for some properties elsewhere, it is prohibitively expensive.
Along the same lines as credit card collection services, HostelTraveler can offer booking engine services for a hostel website that is the absolute cheapest among any competitor that we are aware of. And, this is for the same basic technology.

Thanks for your questions. In terms of positioning, HostelTraveler.com is a leading brand under the Instant World Booking network, which features over 100+ travel portals in different markets. Because of it's breadth, Instant World Booking is uniquely positioned to serve our lodging clients' needs inmany different areas.
HostelTraveler.com focuses on not exclusively the youth hostel and backpacker market, but also on budget lodging in general. You may find that a number of similar services have broadened their offerings in recent years. Nevertheless, the search functions on HostelTraveler.com allow the user to search by type of property.
As far as hotels and other lodgings riding on "hostel" marketing ingenuity, I think you'll find that the market varies susbstantially from country to country and region to region. In fact, a youth hostel in Mexico may be defined as something much different than a youth hostel in Slovenia. This is not challenge academic definitions, but is a mere fact. Furthermore, there is much to be desired by offering budget-oriented guests different types of lodging. For example, a backpacker travelling from city to city across Europe may be quite happy to stay at a hostel in one location, and then an apartment or even B&B in other locations. We have certainly met many people who enjoy this diversity, and it does not detract from the overall service.

It's too bad that a company like hosteltraveler.com, with such a wide range of travel portals, can't redirect their customers that are looking for non-hostel accommodations to one of their many other portals.
