Hello all,
My perfect lifestyle would be living in nature, but still having interesting conversations and people around and a hostel could make this possible..
I think this forum is a source of great information, but I was wondering whether anybody would be interested to have a chat about it in person or online? Anybody - as in experienced hostel owners, people that worked in a hostel or people who have a dream.. we could chat exchange information and who knows maybe you would turn out to be my perfect partner in this project!
Who am I?
I have travelled a bit and have a good idea what I'd expect from a hostel, but have no hostel working experience as such. I speak a few languages (en,fr,de,es,nl) and have a little money saved up.
As a location I prefer green over dry, would love to have forest and rivers around (sea or lake is fine as well) and the land should not be totally flat. I was wondering about Haute Provence in France, but from what I hear there would be a lot of paper works and regulations involved, but maybe I am totally wrong as well, so I am definitely open to other locations as well! Ideally in Europe.. but maybe good flight connections would make North America interesting as well..

Have you seen the hostel chat room?
If you have Gmail chat, Pidgin or another chat program that connects with Gmail or Jabber chat you can be in the chat room all the time and get an instant message whenever someone posts to the chat room. There are only ~5 people using it so far, but there will be more in the future...

I had not seen the chat room feature, so thanks for sharing this! If I am not mistaken you are the webmaster of this site, do you think it would be possible to integrate the chatroom in the menu? If you are still testing it, maybe we can attach the word beta behind it or so?

I had the chatroom on every page but it was causing a technical problem with the website. It should be fixed soon and then I'll add the chat back to every page of the forum. :)

Consider this: there is only one real hostel in the Austrian Alps. There are dozens in Switzerland, but not many people want to go there because it´s so expensive.
Innsbruck is crying out loud for a good hostel. It´s a lively university town with good nightlife, it´s a beautiful place, it´s on the main railway line between Munich and Italy. Easyjet flies to Innsbruck from three locations in the UK, so you could have a lot of guests from there. The area is good for all sorts of outdoor activities in summer and perfect for skiing in winter. You would be in the middle of Austria´s most stunning mountain scenery yet still in a lively town where people find everything they need.
I work at Wombats in Vienna and our guests ask us all the time if there is a good place in the Alps we can recommend. We can recommend a hundred places, but much less with a good hostel.

Hi. I've just joined this wonderful website. I'm so happy to have found it!
I began hosteling back in the mid 80's, when I did my first self-contained bicycle tour with 'American Youth Hostels' - which is now IYH. I love the culture of Hosteling, and am a very gregarious person who enjoys the company of others. I love the outdoors, and pursue many activities including cycling, backpacking, skiing, running, kayaking, and even BOWLING, although it's indoors :)
I've recently left my position at the United Nations, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, because I feel I need a change in my life. Living in NYC is wonderful - I truly love the cultural diversity and excitement of living in the 'big city' - yet I am truly missing the outdoors, and have decided I need to get back to nature, as corny as that may sound.
I've been looking for and applying to open Hostel Management positions, as I know I would be a Perfect Fit for this. I'm a people person, very organized, and have a good marketing / promotion background.
One of my dreams is to open a hostel. In fact, I own 27 acres of land outside of Ellenville, NY - which is 30 minutes drive from New Paltz, NY - which is an INCREDIBLE Outdoor Community. I've thought quite often how fun it would be to run and operate a hostel in that community, but I just don't think the market is there for it, as there aren't a lot of people coming by.
WHAT GRABBED MY ATTENTION about your post was that you are thinking EXACTLY what I am - that it would be exciting yet scary to invest and start you own hostel. I'm actually looking to relocate out of NYC - and perhaps out of the US, and thought that I'd contact you! :)
I'd love to chat with you, and/or anyone else who had ideas about starting a hostel. AS WELL, I'm also looking for employment as a Hostel Manager, most preferably in an area where I can pursue my outdoor pursuits.

@Santa Klaus, thanks for the tip, right now am still focussing on France. Innsbruck sounds nice though, even though I must admit I would rather have greener mountains around me. Don't get me wrong the Alps are great, am just not sure its for me to live there at this point. Other than that I have stayed at Wombats! So maybe we have met!!

Hehe, we had half a million guests in the last ten years, so it´s actually difficult to find people who have not yet stayed here! :)
Please book a flight to Innsbruck and convince yourself that the mountains there are as green as mountains get! I´m sure you would instantly love the place.
