Minimum safety requirements for all youth hostels of HI-Ukraine
All youth hostels working under the umbrella of Ukrainian Youth Hostel Association must comply with these minimal safety requirements.
HI Youth hostel commit themselves to the best practices in providing and guaranteeing the safety and security of their guests
Fire Safety
Every sleeping room, both private ad dorms must have fire-extinguisher on the wall in the most visible place minimum 1 meter from the floor level.
Fire-extinguishers must not be placed in cupboards, or left on the floor or in any other invisible place.
Every wall-mounted fire extinguished must have a sticker with an official sign of a fire extinguisher above it.
Fire-extinguishers must be wall-mounted on the kitchen, common place and at the entrance.
Evacuation plan must be put on the inside of the door of every living room, signed by the hostel owner.
Exit sign sticker must be placed on top of any door leading outside of the hostel.
No hostel doors on the main entrance of the hostel must be locked with a key, but with easy release exit from inside. Instruction on how to release the lock on the door must be indicated on every evacuation plan.
The release mechanism on the lock of the exit door of the hostel must be colored in Red.
Electrical cables and outlets must be properly insulated without visible wires or connections.
2. First Aid
Every hostel must have visible first-aid compartment wall-mounted minimum 1 meter from the floor, visible with a cross and with appropriate set of first aid equipment and medicines according to Ukrainian legislation.
At least one member of staff must have attended a training course on first aid by July 1, 2010 and train other staff members.
3. General Safety
All outlets must have indication of the voltage 220V.
Equipment that is used by guests must be in safe working order, irons, electric cattle, microwaves, computers (laptops) and television and audio equipment. All these must have no visible wires or connections upon inspection.
In bathrooms there must be a handle or anti-slip mat to get out of the bath or shower safely.
With the exception of gas stoves all gas equipment must be labeled “Staff Only may use the gas equipment”.
The entrance/exit of the hostel must be appropriately lit.
Double bunk beds must be safe and usable upon inspection.
