reading "materials"

Foreign Language and Culture for Hospitality

I know that many places offer reading materials in their lounge areas for their guests. Some include International magazines and newspapers. We are planning a similar offering (when we open up?!!), but with a modern twist. We want to make available electronic versions of these articles. (Haven't worked out the details, but will share that later.) My question is: what are some of the more popular newspapers or magazines that clients want to read? Has anyone ever made note of this? What would you recommend for our hostel? Steve-Rolling River Hostel.

We don’t have any magazine subscriptions, but we talked about it once long ago. We decided it would be a good idea to have a selection to appeal to a variety of interests. We came up with something like this:

Men/Women’s Interest:
Cosmopolitan
FHM or Maxim

Travel/Culture:
National Geographic
Transitions Abroad

Financial:
The Economist

Surely there are far more categories that could be listed (music, art, gossip, politics, etc.) but these are just the few that I remember wanting to subscribe to off the top of my head. In the end we opted for a coffee table book that we thought might stimulate conversations instead.

It's a bit of a luxury to have a bunch of subscriptions, but localizing them is a great way to provide some deep local context for guests. For example, here in Maine, you could have available:

Down East
MOFGA Magazine
The Walrus
Dispatch Magazine
Yankee Magazine
Maine+ Maine HD
SKI Magazine(not Maine specific - but a lot of people ski here).

Good point Sampson. Most travelers want to know about the local culture. Setting out the local paper or a magazine about the area is a simple way to introduce them to the surroundings and give them an idea of what's important to the people who live there.

We have plenty of those, including National Geographic, FHM and some Romanian travel magazines in English, but nobody seems to be interested, nor in the book exchange shelf we have here. A few years ago the books were changing very fast, this year, nobody read anything at all... What do your travellers read most?

We have seen a lot of people this year traveling with their Kindle (or other eBook device). All of the smartphones have applications that let you read eBooks too. They're small, lightweight, and you can load as many books as you want before you go or on the road. I wonder if that has made a difference.
