Want to learn about hostel business

Hi, I am Ferad from Barcelona. I join the group with the intention to learn a bit more about the hostel business. I have an idea to build an online platform for booking budged accommodation. I think I would receive a valuable feedback in understanding the deficiencies of current online booking engines such as HostelWorld, booking.com, Hostelbookers, hotels.com etc.

For the service they offer the commission is too high.

Booking.com does not leave properties write their own description and does not make it clear that it is a hostel and not a hotel.

All these OTAS are upselling as they make more money from hostels b and breakfast as they are on higher commission and make more per room sold.

They punish you in ranking for being popular and not getting bookings through them and removing allocation.

They punish you in ranking for being a small hostel and place larger hostels above you.

You can pay more to be ranked higher so it is not an even playing field.

Check out the section called Hostel Reviews, Booking Engines, and Directories to find threads with discussions on where some of the OTAs have gone wrong. Hopefully that will start you off in the right direction.
