Affordable Paris: Two new "designer hostels" for $40 a night
http://current.newsweek.com/budgettravel/2009/05/affordable_paris_two_new_desig.html
Two "design" hostels have opened in Paris within the past year. Trying to shed the granola image of yesteryear, both promise contemporary comforts with rates starting at just €30 ($40) per night.
("Granola image"???)

Is their anybody keeping score on hostel numbers/trends in the US? I would think the EU does, but that is of limited use on this side of the pond. I know the AH&LA does not because most hostels are below 50 rooms.

mate, if you can find a way for aussies to work in the US, ill be there in a flash. sadly, i dont think my fake ID will suffice for a student work permit...
but im still sure theres a way canadian registered workers can get away with working in the states somehow...

If I had some cash flow from HostelManagement.com then I would be able to pay for help, but it still doesn't make any direct money.
(Only indirectly through marketing consulting.)
I will make a thread about this in the Members Chat area... :)

I just saw a moment ago that Arthur Frommer wrote about the new Jazz Hostel story in his blog:
I've repeatedly written that the explosion in the number of hostels is one of the main developments in the world of low-cost travel. Multiple hostels -- way more than the earlier "official" hostels belonging to Hostelling International -- are now open in every major city, and the various hostel-finding websites name as many as 40 options per city in such places as London, Paris, New York. Entrepreneurs all over the world are reacting to the high price of hotels by taking over failed hotels (or industrial buildings) and turning them into dorm-containing hostels charging a fraction of what the hotel industry does.
Highly recommended blog -- I think it's the most interesting travel industry blog I've read:

Hi Gordo, What about comming to the US on a student visa? Take a 1yr business course, full time at a local community college, do exchange work at a hostel for room & board. This may not be the best idea, but its not the worst either.

yeah ive thought about that. theres also working holiday visas for australian students, so i was thinking about enrolling in a course back home, deferring it, getting my visa, then cancelling my enrollment :P
