A Large hostel is now over 50 beds? Wasnt it 300 a year or 2 ago, and 500 before that?
Anyway, congrats to all the winners!
Here are the results of the 2011 Hoscar Awards in London -- Hostelworld's hostel awards. (Top-rated on Hostelworld.com in 2010)
These lists are from the press release:
Best Hostels Worldwide
[Does anyone know where the regular top 10 worldwide list is?]
Best USA Hostels
Best Hostels in North America
Best Large Hostels Worldwide (Over 50 beds)
Best Small Hostels Worldwide (Under 50 beds)
Special Contribution Award – INOUT Hostel, Barcelona, Spain
Lifetime Achievement Award – Wombat's City Vienna – The Base, Vienna, Austria
Here are some additional highlights by country, featuring hostels that I've met here on HM or in person:
(If I've missed any HM users in the above list, let me know. It's 5 a.m., and I'm a bit tired and jet lagged. :))
Congratulations to all the hostels that received awards!

A Large hostel is now over 50 beds?
That was an interesting choice. :)
I've worked in hostels between 60 and 200 beds, and I considered those to be small (60) and medium-size hostels (120 beds). 200 beds is getting into the "large" category where you're managing a larger staff and having different issues with managing bookings and customer service.
I wonder why they didn't list the full "top 10" hostels worldwide. Is it still filled with hostels in Portugal?

I`m a bit surprised that none of these top hostels are located in Australia or New Zealand. I only have experience with hostels overhere so I cant compare. I`m curious for an explanation.

Because Australian hostels arent actually THAT good - some have fantastic facilities but are generally much larger and more impersonal. Theyre often much older and entrenched in their ways with honest advice being replaced with travel agency sales pitches.
Was that a bit bitter? Its not meant to be, but I've stayed and worked in some of the better rated hostels in Australia and the European ones certainly have the edge.

Our smallest hostel has 236 beds, we found that "interesting", too! :/
Anyway, congrats to K´s House Hostels in Japan, but we´ll fight back this year! :)

It seems easier to get high ratings in a 51-bed "large hostel" than in a 350-bed large hostel. (personal attention)
I'm still wondering why the press release didn't list the full "top 10" hostels worldwide this time. Every other year lists the top 10. Was there something weird about the data like all of the top 10 hostels were in one city? :)
Does anyone know the full top 10?

You needed a minimum of close to 400 reviews for the year to qualify for these awards. Therefore hostels in smaller markets that don't run all their web bookings through hostelworld had no chance to win anything. City Hostel Seattle was actually the highest rated hostel in the USA on Hw in 2010.

I ´ve worked in 400-500 beds hostels. As a customer, I prefer smaller ones, but for some other reasons, and some other kinds of guests, the bigger ones are sometimes better. A large size does not help in ratings, so the award for big hostels was a good idea, in my opinion, in order to let people know which of the ´big ones´are the best. Now the award seems unuseful to me. If small is under 50 and big over 50, it´s pure logic that the winner of the general award will win also another prize, so I really do not understand the reason.
Anyway, congratulations to all the winners :)
