I wasn't aware that Eastern and Western Europe were two different continents. Geography is such a rapidly changing field these days.
If Western Europe were listed, it seems pretty clear that the winners would be in Portugal. Perhaps Eastern Europe was listed instead in order to recognize some other great hostels and to give out a few more awards?

Thanks for your comments about this year’s Hoscars.
First of all, we’d like to offer our congratulations once more to all of the hostels that won an award this year.
Regarding the Continent awards, you are correct that we did not include Western Europe in this section. We realised over the last few years that many of the worldwide awards were dominated by properties in Western Europe and so took the decision to leave this region out in the interests of recognising as many hostels as possible for their hard work and not repeating worldwide awards in another category.
As the hoscars evolves year on year we add or remove categories, this is to keep it fresh and interesting for both hostel owners/managers and customers alike.
