HostelBookers has announced their 2013 Awards for Excellence
All awards are given out by region. The categories are:

The following clarification about the awards is provided by HB:
- A minimum of 25 reviews received in 2012 is required to be considered for an award.
- The winners are chosen based on the highest rating achieved in each category.
- Accommodations are only eligible to win one award. If an accommodation qualifies in more than one category, they will be allocated the award for which they received the highest rating.
- Chains need to have a minimum of three accommodations under the same brand name to be considered a chain.
- HostelBookers’ decision is final.

Take note HW - clear, simple rules. Perhaps theyre not perfect but there's no animosity or questioning the validity of the results.

True story. HostelsClub throws a party every year, and they don't give awards or organize a conference. Free accommodation, gondola ride through Venice, dinner, drinks, and a kickass party in a palace - all to say "thanks for working with us." It's pretty sweet.
In support of HostelBookers though, they did put on a great reception two years ago in London. Maybe that could become an annual thing?

All these agents do have a great excuse for an annual party. The HW Conference to my thinking is like the Mecca for hostels. There is an air of excitement at each conference and the quality of the speakers this year was sensational. But based on what some speakers mentioned about inaction from hostels since the previous year and the lack of furious note taking when pearls of wisdom were shared, I start to wonder if these sensational speakers are what attendees really want?
GOMIO Conferences have been great for being less formal and facilitating like minded people getting together. The Golden Backpack Awards and conferences in Australia are completely different again and they did not get many attendees in London last year.
Personally I like the business improvement focus of the HW Conference. Its a struggle to get enough socialising in around the presentations but I would not want less presentations.
