The 2nd Hostel Management Unconference is happening in Greece. It's fully booked already, but check it out and consider hosting an event at your hostel... :)
Would love to see one happen somewhere warm like New Zealand, Australia, or Miami somewhere between December and February ;)

well though it appears san francisco is not exotic enough for these conferences - USA Hostels would be happy to host a conference at their award winning (yes, i'll say it) facility....
now someone let me know if miami happens 'cause i'll never get permission for australia...

BTW - good luck with greece. i know how difficult this country is to travel during a strike.... my people can't save their own economy but they do excel at protesting...

Are you based at the SF hostel? I'm near Berkeley. I was trying to put together a meetup of Northern California hostels in San Francisco, but this winter has been crazy.
I still want to do that -- maybe we could set it up for right after I get back :)
I'm also helping to put together a meetup for San Francisco travel bloggers. Maybe hostels would be interested in meeting travel writers...
My original idea for HostelManagement.com gatherings was that there would be three kinds -- but it started to sound like it was getting complicated and overambitious:
- "Unconference" -- something like a conference, but spontaneously organized on the spot and facilitated by everyone attending
- "Meetup" -- hostel people getting together at a bar for an evening (this is what I was planning for San Francisco)
- "Retreat" -- Hostel people go do something interesting off the beaten track, like go charter a sailboat in Costa Rica or Rhode Island for a weekend, or rent some yurts in the Sierra Nevada. Don't big companies get to that kind of teambuilding all the time? Hostels should get to do it too :)
I think any kind of gathering of hostel people will have a beneficial outcome...
The idea was that any hostel could create and host an event and and that there would be several per year in different parts of the world so that there would be some local networking happening everywhere in the world at least once a year.
If people want to have more meetups, just say "I want more meetups" and we can make it happen :)

I would think West coast hostels are getting a lot of visitors flying in from Australia (via Fiji and Hawaii). Flying to Australia would be a great way to network with those hostels that are sending backpackers to LA and SF ;)
