Hello,

I am in the research stage of starting a hostel advertising placement company. Basically, I've worked in advertising for the past 5 years, and I have tons of clients who are looking for additional advertising placements. I recently backpacked through europe only using hostels and noticed that a hostel could be a great place to place advertising.

What are your thoughts on that? Would you be willing to put advertising in your hostel (of course it will be relevant to your guests, and non-invasive) by allowing this you would have an additional revenue stream coming into your hostel that wasn't before...

According to my experience, hostels allow to put up flyers and posters for free. They usually have a wall or a desk separate for this. They just wanna know what you are advertising, and it should be relevant to the guests. Recently, I distributed my own flyers in all of the hostels in Cusco, and almost all of them allowed me to do it for free. However, you can still ask money from your advertisers just for the distribution. You could even just send the flyer online to the hostel, and ask them to print it for something small in exchange.

Were you thinking of something electronic like the Joy Technology System, or something more low-tech like a Mini Cards rack? I frequently see advertisements above the urinals in bars, and that seems pretty effective.

Aside from other hostels' flyers I'm usually pretty selective about who I allow to advertise in my hostel, and I prefer to keep it to a minimum. In an intimate hostel setting it seems like the more products your guests see you push, the less they trust anything you say. For a hostel with less one-on-one interaction, this becomes far less important. As a source of supplemental income, offering paid advertising space in the hostel seems like a really easy option.

As a frequent guest of hostels I can tell you we LOVE useful ads. Tell me about interesting places to visit, offers for trips, backpacks, good affordable food around, other nearby destinations and so on. Of course you shouldn't turn your whole hostel into advertising board but some ads are most welcome.
