The following news was drawn to my attention. It concerns an arson attack on Cambridge YHA hostel, England. No serious injuries.

I searched around and found a picture of the hostel:

It is believed the fire at the Youth Hostel Associaton property in Tenison Road, which originated in a first-floor toilet, was started deliberately.
...
The toilet was left with fire damage, and smoke damage was reported throughout the building.

Fire investigators have confirmed arson as the cause of the fire.

The two storey building was damaged by smoke after a fire erupted in a ground floor bin.

That last one appears to be a residential hostel rather than a YHA or Backpackers. A different type of place,I can't see any reason they could be related.

I was forgetting that there's another kind of hostel over there :)
How can you tell the difference? The article doesn't say what kind of hostel it is.

I just know that there are no hostels (in our sense) in that area of the country -- I've not heard of the locality concerned, but all the towns round there are residential and with no particular tourist interest that I know of (except Gatwick Airport close by).

Man arrested after hostel fire

OFFICERS have arrested a man following an arson attack at Cambridge Youth Hostel.

The 29-year-old was held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and bailed to appear at Parkside police station on July 8.

...Duncan Simpson, the YHA's head of policy and corporate affairs, told the News the hostel will remain closed while repair work is carried out.

He said: "We think we will keep it closed for at least the next two weeks.

"There is a bit of work that needs to be done. There is some fire damage, but it is mostly smoke and water damage. The IT equipment has been badly damaged by the water.

"We are contacting guests to make alternative arrangements for them. We have got nearby hostels in Saffron Walden and Lea Valley, and we will be doing all we can to provide alternative accommodation in Cambridge or at other hostels."
