Arthur Frommer's blog encourages the use of hostels:
The hot new trend in travel is the use of hostels by persons of all ages:
...some hostels offer single and double rooms, not simply dorms; and that even the dorms aren't always occupied to capacity. And it's important to consider several other advantages of the hostels, such as their information services (supplied on large bulletin boards) about cost-saving tours, attractions, and meals. It's the camaraderie and shared activities of a hostel that are their most attractive feature.
He also mentions hostels in a post about the weakening dollar:
Hostels First: Single persons traveling alone will, increasingly, be looking into the use of European hostels -- whose numbers have exploded in recent years. All over the continent, entrepreneurs by the scores have taken over failing hotels and converted double rooms into mini dorms supplying overnight lodgings that are rented to people of all ages for as little as $20 a night.
