I suppose I should have added that there is no mention of the scale or sensitivity either. I wonder if weighting of some type will be implemented or if the scale will be adjusted/lengthened/changed from the current "happy face" model.
Hey
I know many of you are aware of this change but as this has just been publicly announced last week I thought I would post up the news here too. This is without a doubt the most significant change HW has done to their site and business model since their sale. This has been a long time coming from all perspectives.
New categories in bold
We have all dealt with the old categories either as users, owners/hostel staff, travel agents or critics. This new category matrix is better and more useful. I have always believed that the review categories function as talking points for the written parts of the review. We train our staff to understand this above all else. As such I am glad to see some new categories appear and some silly ones leave (Very glad to see Character eliminated.) All reviews are subjective but having well thought out objective categories will aid the guest in improving the content and context of the written part of the review and water down the overall averages a little (which is a good thing)
Implementation will be a nightmare I believe (and the ensuing debates/criticisms). Is it better to flush everyone and start everyone new? Or perhaps meter the new system in, using some complicated, mathematical way? Have a dual system for the next twelve months by perhaps showing an average of the last 12 months along side the new reviews and scoring matrix? New hostels may benefit more, small hostels may suffer, typical bar type "Fun" hostels will definitely score differently as a hostel with a quiet, comfortable atmosphere now has equal standing in a category that was generally the party hostel, pub crawl domain , hostels with "Character" will be scored and reviewed differently (I was going to build moats, hire mimes and paint cartoon characters on our walls to improve our "Character" ratings this summer!! thank goodness that has been now averted haha). "Facilities" is a welcome addition as it will encourage not only comments about the types of hostel facilities but also the condition of the hostel facilities.
I really like the new "Value For Money" category, it will really help to illuminate the low priced bottom feeding motels/properties that add everything extra on at checkin, the "premium priced" location only hostels, the one banana and cold toast breakfast included hostels, and of course the membership based chain hostels that price their property online in such a way to encourage membership purchases. Paradigm shift definitely. Hostels that advertise true "all included" pricing will be recognized in comments and statistically by their overall review score.
It is my hope that as hostels get better at providing a true hostelling experience an evolving review system will serve as a truly usable comparative tool for guests and hostels.
Improving the category choices is only the first step in improving the review structure, I believe. I hope that along with this improvement that we find more integrated social networking efforts by the booking engines, greater review fraud detection, more demographic knowledge of previous reviewers for new bookers prior to booking and elimination of non-hostel businesses from the hostel booking engines.
Hostelworld has great review density, amazing uptake of review use by all stakeholders and an easily used system that all users quickly understand and utilise. Instead of trying to fit non-hostel properties into a hostel booking website, why not use the review system as a basis for an ad campaign that will bring new customers to true hostels. It is an incredible third party assurance that hostel properties are great places to stay. What an asset! It is not used beyond our current demographic/customer base. Google knows this very well. It is a mystery to me that Hostelworld or Hostelbookers have never seen the incredible marketing potential of their respective review systems to encourage new customers to try hostels. Both of these companies have signed up so many non-hostels to try and capture new revenue streams. Having new customers choose motel/hotel properties at the "hostel" end of the price scale is short sighted and silly. New customers with bad experiences in low priced motel/hotels will never use a hostel booking engine again. The extremely valuable review systems have incredible potential for new business sources for the booking engines and hostels.
With the incredible start up speed/usage of airbnb.com, couchsurfing.com, crashpadder.com, istopover.com etc etc. Hostel booking engines have to work with true hostels and industry stakeholders to seperate the hostel experience from all the other choices out there. One way is to use the review system as a marketing tool. Another is to eliminate marginal properties not committed to the industry and the customer base (as wide as it is). Show new customers why staying in a hostel is such a unique, consistent and third party certified and reviewed experience.

Thanks for the update. It looks like an improvement. I think that getting rid of character was a good idea. :)
I wonder if the "Atmosphere" vs. "Fun" rating will put less pressure on hostels to be the entertainment for the guests rather than the destination being the entertainment.

I agree that atmosphere is a good category, because as ACBB said, quiet sociable atmospheres will score high. There will have to be other info in the hostel description or the set of reviews to indicate whether a high 'atmosphere' is a party hostel or a quiet chatty hostel.
I'm a bit uncertain about 'facilities'. Is the guest assessing: "How good were the facilities that I used, (eg plenty of showers and hot water, well-equipped and spacious kitchen)" rather than: "it scores high because there were lots of facilities eg gym, DVDs, pool tables".

Interesting changes. I like them. Never personally liked Fun, and never really understood what character meant. Value for money also a good category to add, as it's very important to hostel guests. I'm not sure overall ratings will change a lot, as in my experience people are often either happy or unhappy - the happy ones give overall good ratings , and the unhappy ones the opposite. They don't always make a lot of sense in the individual categories.

I like the way this new category will enable written comments easier on both sides of the "Facilities" in a hostel. As you say both the quality of facilities and type of facilities are important to the needs and wants of travelers.
Currently you can find a "Facilities" description like this in many hostels:
Fully outfitted Kitchen
Entertainment centre
Library
Swimming Pool
Bikes for rent
Free Linens and towels
Free Internet
Ensuite Dorms
ie one broken toaster oven, a 1950's vintage microwave, broken dishes and burnt pans, a tv that doesn't work, boken nintendo set, a library (magazine rack in a lobby) that has with no readable books, an empty motel style swimming pool, dial up internet, ratty old sheets and towels, broken down bicycles for rent, no door to the bathroom in the dorm or guests from other rooms have to walk through the dorm to use the bathroom
Just bringing this category to the list will cause people to evaluate what is on offer more directly in the comment section.

I believe you are right about the satisfied/less satisfied issue for a lot of people but having more categories that are more direct to the hostelling experience should also help to or at least cause a bit more critical thinking about the hostel. For a certain segment of travelers (review guru's) it will give them more chances to prove just how great a reviewer they are by their thoughtful comments on each category. lol.
Haha. I used to hate the reviews of "Fun" that went like these for instance "I didn't do any of the organised stuff at the hostel as I was so tired from my trip" then score us 60% for Fun. Or "The bar I went to was so boooring" then give 60% Or "The people at the hostel that day were such a drag" then give 60%. At least there will be no more of that nonsense. Sure Atmosphere" is subjective but it should at least help the reviwere to describe the Atmosphere from their standpoint.
I really would like to see more demographics applied to the reviews. It used to be a lot better. Now the majority of reviews are by "Anonymous". Give the "Facebook"/"Twitter generation more tools. It is a fact of life and HW hasn't been able to crack that nut yet. They have an opt in inhouse social network that doesn't seem to be used much. I could be wrong but due to the large number of anonymous reviews it just seems weak as far as reviews are concerned.

Good idea. "Connect with Twitter or Facebook" would be so easy, and make the reviews better.

There used to be a lot more demographic details as you say, but wasn't that all done away with on privacy grounds? I guess if people opted in to having such details as FB shared it could work. I'm not sure if people want that level of contact with strangers? Perhaps they do, I'm not an expert on it at all.

Many people don't think twice about posting detailed public information online anymore. The Facebook/Twitter connect could be optional, and they could check a box to give permission to publicly attach their accounts to their reviews.

Yes, that could work. I'm not up with the lack of privacy that seems normal now. I think I'll stay back in the 20th century, where I belong.
