"Augmented Reality Browsers" for Mobile Phones and Netbooks
"Augmented Reality Browsers" are an impressive new technology that will likely spawn a variety of travel apps for mobile devices. These browsers use your phone-camera's video and overlay data on top of the video image as you scan the surroundings with your phone.
It's possible to create mashups with this technology so, for example, you could scan the surrounding area with your mobile phone's video and see apartments for rent overlaid on the video image in real time.
Here's another demo that shows someone using an iPhone to scan the surrounding area for other Twitter users:
I imagine that in the future there will be travel-related mobile phone apps that allow people to scan the area with their phones video to locate accommodation, things to do, public transportation, etc. It might not just be mobile phones but also GPS-enabled netbooks that would be able to do this when hooked up to a video camera. (GPS in netbooks should be widespread soon.)

If you point this one at the ground you can even see the position of constellations below the horizon on the other side of the planet:
It's only a matter of time before some of the augmented reality apps have hostel data in them -- or even an AR app from a hostel booking engine or one of their affiliates :)
