Backpacker demographics

Does anyone know if there is any information on numbers of backpackers coming into or traveling within Canada or the United States? I have found them for Australia and New Zealand.

I agree totally with what you are saying. I have been in contact with a number of agencies in Canada trying to get facts and figures. Canadian Tourism Commission just gives me an automated reply that I will be contacted within 2 working days. I guess they don't work very often as it has been 2 weeks now. Tried Tourism BC, Alberta, and Ontario and have received automated surveys asking me to rate how good their service is. So my question is how do we go about setting up a youth tourism/backpackers information forum? It would have to be geared towards collecting and distributing the info to "all" interested parties. It would have to be divided into provincial and country wide groups(these are just ideas). I would be interested in helping out. Anyone want to take the facilitators position?

probably, anybody who is interested in the information? i have also searched for such information regarding Canada. the only thing i found was tourism stats for 2009, nothing backpack related.

All interested parties means to me is anyone who wants the information, especially anyone wanting to work in the youth tourism/travel/accommodation industry. It is hard enough finding the info so it may as well be shared.

If you mean an online forum, I could set up a Canadian section here if you are interested. It could be public or private. There are already many Canadian hostels as members here. There are over 1000 visits to the site from Canada each month, so the audience already exists. :)
