Backpackers bag 'over-rated' Bondi

The soaring dollar means Australia is getting more expensive for travellers from Europe. And some US and English backpackers - Sydney's traditional cash cow - are saying they are disappointed with the city's high costs and attractions.

That attitude is reflected in Tourism Australia figures that show backpacker numbers were already down 4000 on last year. Now the local industry faces a "double whammy'' as it struggles to recover from the global financial crisis - overseas visitors are choosing cheaper destinations and Australians are seizing on the stronger dollar for bargain holidays overseas.

Part of it is probably cost but it also comes down to new destinations. I have a staff leaving next week for China as she already did Australia a while back. And I have another leaving for Brazil in January. Same thing. Backpackers are ground breakers. Sydney will just have to adjust pricing or offer deals specifically for travellers if they want to keep their market. Wondering if the rest of Australia is suffering as bad though.

agree, costs is much cheaper in Asia. like here at Green Mango, dorm beds are only US$5 dollars per day...
