BACKPACKER hostels and budget hotels have mushroomed in the past two years.
As many as four such businesses open each month to cater to the budget travel boom. Popping up in areas like Little India, Jalan Besar and Lavender, they upset old-time backpacker hostel owners who say the newcomers use a 'quick bucks' approach.
Singapore Tourism Board figures show a record number of visitors in the past seven months, hitting an unprecedented 1,095,000 visitors in June this year.
Hostelworld is currently listing 46 hostels in Singapore.
