Maybe i'm overstepping, but I was wondering if anyone knows for sure if booking.com has been offering a 12% rate to hostels lately. I just heard a rumor that they are trying to recruit new hostels in the USA and are offering a 12% rate.
As we're paying more than that, naturally i'm curious to know if this is really just a rumor or true. I had heard this at the hostelworld conference earlier this year, but at that time only heard it in relation to European (and I think specifically eastern European) hostels.

Slushysnow mentioned something very similar about the Wotif/Expedia Commissions.
I haven't heard anything about Booking offering lower commissions, but it's possible. Maybe for a limited time until they have the property hooked? Hopefully if we have any new properties reading through they can shed some light on this one.

Maybe hostels should tell them that they will take it if they drop it to 10% on shared rooms and lock it there permanently (or at least 15 years). Hostels could coordinate these negotiations. If OTAs have to compete for hostels' business (something that the WRI monopoly tried to eliminate), commissions could drop.
