That's complete bullshite. Although we have more and more older travelers, but they are not the same hostelling generation as it was ten years ago. They never been to hostels before. Obviously the hostel market have multiplied itself during the past decade (IMHO much more than the youth travelers' demand) and we all are in this bubble now.

There might be a wider range of people staying at hostels in 2030, but there will still be young people around.

Here´s a review we got this week:
mature couple. We were very impressed, will stay at Wombats again. Only put averave for fun and were not at hostel for that, made very welcolm and met some interesting young people. Why is it assumed everyone who stays at hostels is young, we are in our 60's, they meet our needs well. Kitchen,Laundy, Location, price-- it is a market that could be further developed with more retired people travelling.

I was thinking that maybe HW set up bedandbreakfastworld.com to try and keep the commissions coming in from those who considered themselves (wrongly!) too old for hostels.
My parents, in their 50s, stayed with us the other week in a double. It was their first hostel experience, and they were pleasantly surprised with the way hostels work. They especially liked having the ability to prepare their own food in the kitchen.
Jeez it's stressful having your parents stay though... :D
I really like when we have nice older couples staying, if they're sociable it really creates a nice atmosphere. It's amazing how people are so polite when there's someone who looks like their aunty and uncle about!

Klaus, that might be a really good idea. Last week I had a particularly difficult pack of travellers who were out of control of themselves on a nightly basis. I asked the owner of my hostel (an man in his 60's) to hang around in the evenings just to have a fatherly figure in the house. I was amazed at how differently everyone behaved when he was around. Most of them had no idea that he was the owner.
Just for Oktoberfest hire a sweet older couple to walk around the hostel with a plate of cookies and tell everyong how cute and sweet they are. It's endearing and might just build that familiar connection that makes people think of the hostel as a home instead of just a place to crash after getting obliterated.

Maybe you need a Mr Myiyagi type, someone who looks old and harmless, but can bring the pain when needed :D.
