I can't understand how a place of such beauty can be allowed to close. Is there noone with an interest in saving the place ??

I wonder how many beds the hostel has. They need $1.5 million to fix it.
I read that they have 30 beds. It's not too big in terms of capacity but most of their rooms are with only 2 or 4 beds

I'm surprised that the HI Group won't come in and help maintain one of their own hostels that was voted in the top 5 and is highly regarded in LP. The pricing seems rather extravagant as well for it to be fixed and brought up to code. I wonder how long they have known about this before going public about it.

I wish them all the best with raising the funds they need to stay open or reopen. It looks like a beautiful spot.

I'm not sure what the HI Group's policy is on bailing out hostels that are in financial trouble. Probably if they started helping one hostel financially they would be inundated by requests from other member hostels for assistance.

I don't think HI would put money into such a thing - it would be up to HI-USA, as HI is just a group of individual a national associations - they don't give money to individual countries are a rule. I doubt HI-USA could make a case for spending such a large amount of a relatively small building. Whether the price of refurbishment is realistic I have no idea, though often they state a high price in the hope of attracting funding. The only hope in my opinion would be govt funding (very unlikely in the current climate) or a rich benefactor - possibly a difficult ask in the conditions we're in now. HI associations used to get more in the way of govt money, but these days I think most people see them as not much different to commercial accomm providers.

A Farewell Celebration for the Redwood Hostel, Jan. 23
http://norcalhostels.org/redwoods/news/p,3513/
As the Redwood Hostel closes its doors indefinitely, we gather with community members, colleagues, hostel guests, and staff past and present, to celebrate the rich and varied history of this unique place.
Anyone here going? I would like to go, but it's a 6.5 hour drive each way so I'm not sure if I will be able to...
