I've no experience of them because I'm not used to the camping level of travel, and it's just half a stage better. I prefer the hostel level of comfort. You can see the following levels:
Camping: you have to take everything.
Camping barns: you have to take nearly everything except a tent. Mattresses were mentioned in the article, but I think they usually just provide floors. You will need your own portable gas stove.
Bunkhouses: You have to take bedding and food, but in other respects they are like a simple hostel. [Many bunkhouses are indeed as good as a standard hostel, and provide bedding for a small charge.]
Hostels.
B&Bs, guest houses.
Hotels.
Most families nowadays stay in self-catering cottages or apartments, assuming they want to stay in the same location for a week or two.
