Carbisdale Castle hostel is the most famous hostel in Scotland and possibly the biggest castle hostel in the World. It is currently closed for repairs. But now the website www.yhagroup.co.uk has ominous news: it may never re-open!

It is not suitable for modern standards and around two-thirds of the building still needs to be brought up to scratch.

I can't imagine what is needed: I stayed there some years ago and it was of superb standard. They said exactly the same about Derwentwater -- that's now a
rousing success under independent management WITHOUT the need for hundreds of thousands to be spent on it.

Don't ask ME why: I disagree totally with the whole policy of YHA and SYHA. Take a look at the link. From the comments made on that link, it is clear that several other people think the same as me.

It's baffling to me why non-profit hostel organizations would close profitable hostels at a period in history when independent hostels (that have additional taxes and restrictions) are expanding around the world.

Is there any way that the members could collaboratively review the finances of the organizations to see if there are other ways that the organizations could function without closing so many hostels? What is the money being spent on? Are management taking bonuses at the same time that they are closing hostels? Etc.
