Carbon Off-Setting
We would like your help.
We are looking at the possibility in employing a 'Carbon Off-Sett Facility' within our venues, would guests pay and extra 10% per night on the bed rate to have their stay 'Carbon Neutral' this same money would be used for green/environmental issues around the world, and would be managed by an outside respected and independent Carbon Management company?

Please respond with your thoughts!

The best explanation can be found at:http://www.cni-uk.com/
In essence guests pay a fee which is then paid to the above who employ the monies in recognised and regulated projects around the world (we will be employing the monies we raise on projects in Thailand)

I think this is a good idea.
I believe the guest will be willing to pay as long as he/she can trust this money is actually used for carbon offset. I guess a good advertising and communication on carbon offset would help.
Make sure as well that your hostel shows that it actually cares for the environment and tries actively to reduce its carbon footprint.

I wonder if it would help you or hurt you to list some of your beds as Carbon Offset beds with a higher price. Then guests would have the choice of paying more to support the cause, or paying less if they are less environmentally concerned. It would certainly tell you how many of your guests are really supportive enough to willingly pay the extra 10%.
On the other hand, if you just include it in the price for everyone and inform them that "10% of your total stay will be donated to Carbon Offset projects in Thailand" they might look at it differently. I would imagine that you would have a lot more money to give to the projects this way, and people would look more favorably on the hostel even though it cost them more.
You could always test the waters by putting a Donation Jar at the reception with information about the project and see how many people voluntarily donate. If you start telling them that YOU are giving 10% of your revenue from their stay, then the number of people who donate just might go up too.

Thank you for the suggestions, we had looked at the possibility of charging differently for Carbon Neutral beds but the work involved in adding yet another tier to the on line booking agents would be a nightmare, we believe if we are to pursue this we will have to add this additional costs to all of our beds/rooms (the unfortunate situation is the booking agents will take their 8-18% commissions on the charge)
Wish us luck as we aim to go live with this very soon.
