Changes to the HW rating system
Some of you noticed some weird things happening to the HW ratings yesterday. The number of reviews for each hostel skyrocketed and the ratings for each hostel plummeted. This was just a hiccup while HW converted to the new rating system, and should be resolved already.
So what has changed?
- The “Character” rating is gone.
- The “Value for Money” and “Facilities” ratings are now included.
- All of the reviews that your hostel has ever received will now be shown, but your hostel’s overall rating score will still only be calculated from the reviews from the last six months.
- If you run a season hostel (you haven’t received any reviews in the last 6 months) then your overall rating score will be calculated from your reviews from the last 12 months.

This is not fair to the hostels who work damn hard on getting people to write reviews so that it keeps the amount of reviews showing as high as possible for the last 6months. This is what gets us most interest in our guesthouse, now we just look like any other guesthouse with lots of reviews. I am expecting a big drop in customers via Hostelworld, time to add other booking engines ; - )
Hostelworld is going the same way as Tripadvisor.

I see that 'owner comments' are now displayed automatically rather than having the user have to click on each response. step in the right direction.
as far as being fair on hostels... thats not the point. reviews aren't for OUR benefit, their for the guests. of course we all want a review system that makes our hostel look as good as it can but really its to provide an ACCURATE image of the hostel for people booking. that some people work hard to get more reviews has nothing to do with the actual quality of the hostel itself.

Hostel ratings over 6 months old are not always giving you an ACCURATE image of a hostel. Hostel standards can change very quickly and owners change as well, which quite often sees standards change too.
I personally would not read reviews older than 6 months old because businesses change hands and standards change too. So, if it is an ACCURATE image of the hostel then surely 6 months of reviews is enough to see what a hostel is like.
