City website
Sorry if my writing is a bit odd, my english is not perfect :)
Hello guys, I've been around here for some time, reading all kind of topics related to hostel management, but I opened this topic for a different reason. I am planning to open a website related to my city. My idea is to make a "interactive" site where visitors could comment, make their own stories (related to my city and hostels), upload photos etc. I have a dilemma regarding hostel reviews from my city by my site. First option is to just list them, copy information and description from hostels, and link that page to their home website (if they have one), and wait for users reviews and rate them. Other option is to write my own "review" of the hostel (regarding location, prices, photos etc). And third and least likely option is to stay at each hostel and write my own review / pay someone to do it instead of me.
What would you like to see, when u come to a site of city you are planning to see.
Btw site will have informations about the city, places to visit, things to do, transportaion etc...
Thanks for your help :)

It's difficult to get people to leave hostel reviews. I wouldn't count on their doing it in the short term. If you write some basic info about the hostel first, it will at least give the page some content in the beginning.
72 views, and noone can give simple feedback :(
Sometimes it takes a few days for people to reply :)

I agree. I don't have much experience with visiting hostels, or with that kind of websites. All of my knowledge is from this site :). Any ideas what would make visitors leave comments. I think having them register is a bad way for that kind of thing, but its important for some other (newsletter, "customer" database") etc.. What would "trigger" visitor to leave a comment regardin his/hers impression with the hostel.
Putting quality texts and informations on the site, refreshing it from time to time would help, im sure, but is that enough?

Tough question :)
A website based on reviews is difficult to create from scratch. If you could aggregate reviews from other websites with the option for users to add new reviews to your own site it might be easier.

I think aggregating the reviews of the hostel is the best option, certainly at first, theres nothing worse than an empty review site - but if you can offer your own review regarding the location and nearby sights/nightlife etc then you're starting to add value to your site; which is the idea at the end of the day. It's important though to not comment yourself on the hostel(s) itself if you havent stayed there.
How to trigger reviews? sheeeeet, if we had the answer for that we'd all be set :P People, in my experience, tend to leave reviews when they have a really good or really bad experience; 'it was ok' is hardly a review. I would normally say that an incentive is a good way to start - but if your site is city specific then at the point when people would leave a review, its also the time theyre (most likely) going to leave the city too. It's pretty hard to entice people with offers for a place theyre just leaving. Some sort of competition perhaps? If the prize can be used in a different locale then you eliminate the aforementioned problem.
Just throwin' a few ideas out there.

I wonder if putting two buttons at the bottom of the page would encourage a response: either click "I liked this hostel" (thumbs up) or "I didn't like this hostel" (thumbs down). The button click would then open up a form which asks for details and a few checkboxes for ratings.

click 'i liked this hostel' and it asks you to a leave a review.
click 'i didnt like this hostel' and it loads your computer with malware and porn.
i like it :P
