Yes, and here's the secret. Aside from the positive contribution couchsurfers usually provide to the community and atmosphere, we also have surfers that stay two nights and then decide to pay to extend. In addition, we have developed somewhat of a reputation among other San Francisco couchsurfing hosts such that when they are full (and they know most hosts are full) they sometimes refer surfers to us. In the off season, every little bit helps.

That is a great way to use couchsurfing as a hostel! We have been struggling with this for a while, but had not been able to quite find the right tone and description... Thank you for the great example :-)
