Covid-19 & Hostel Best Practices: TEMPERATURE CHECKS OF GUESTS?

Hi fellow hostel managers,

Has anyone started to take the temperature of guests using forehead thermometers?

Either new guests, or existing guests on some schedule, to check for a fever as possible sympton of coronavirus?

I have seen hotels in certain parts of the world start doing this, but difficult to find specifics on policies or procedures. Some companies are also testing every employee at the start of each shift.

Has anyone out there who runs a hostel started doing this? Or forced to do this by new government policies?

If so, please share how guests have reacted to this, and how your policies about how and when to take temperature.

I plan to start a policy to take guest and staff temperatures within the next week.

This is a great topic for discussion as we have been thinking of doing the same thing at ITH Hostels once our thermometers arrive. We actually had a guest test positive for Covid-19 two weeks ago which was a horrifying prospect to deal. Thankfully, we have been able to avoid any of the other 29 guests/staff catch the virus thanks to a thorough and detailed Checklist provided by SD County Board of Health.

We have been working with independent hosts in several Asian countries on developing safety plans and policies for their hostels. Jimmy, would love to learn more about how you handled the incident at ITH.

The framework for our strategies when developing the safety plans, business recovery plans, and communication plans are available to all here for free: SOS guide for COVID-19. I must add:

Even in the last nine days when we released our framework for creating safety plans, more research (especially regarding air circulation and infection) has come out and more countries (such as Italy) have issued guidance for hospitality businesses.
These guidelines were really developed for hosts in developing destinations – in the U.S., there are a lot more legal, risk, and insurance implications that are not addressed in our framework.
