Vaccine requirement

For the past two years I have been booking private rooms only due to covid. I am eager to get back to shared dorms and with the very communal nature of a hostel anyway, I am considering requiring vaccination against covid. Is anyone else doing this or considering it? I would love input on how to execute a vaccine requirement and thoughts about this topic.

Hi Bethany, Nice to hear from you again. I haven't heard about any hostels asking for proof of vaccination but there's no reason your hostel couldn't be the first. In San Francisco, bars and nightclubs themselves pushed for legislation for patrons to have proof of vaccination. I remember seeing a news report with a bar owner who said he felt the requirement actually helps their business because their patrons feel safer to drink with others who have been vaccinated. I have decided to require vaccination or proof of negative covid test within 3 days prior to check-in. My hostel is seasonal, so we're closed until May and I won't really have much feed back until then. I made the decision after seeing the requirement in action in Canada at restaurants. I was worried about how to do it. At restaurants the host would look at your vaccine card and ID (or app if they had that in place). It was easy. I'm not sure yet how to handle late check-ins. But I'll probably ask guests to send a picture of their documents in advance if they are going to check-in after hours.
