Do people keep en-suite bathrooms cleaner?
Well, I guess the title says it all...
I was thinking about this. We've all seen some pretty revolting hostel bathrooms before - not necessarily due to a lack of cleaning, more a result of a lack of 'aim' or general disregard by guests for the mess they occasionally make. But upon reflection, I see far less of this in ensuite bathrooms. Part of this will be because fewer people use the bathroom of course but I was wondering if people deliberately keep it cleaner - if you know the people you're sharing it with, are you more likely to clean up after yourself or not make a mess in the first place? If one person in a room is making a mess, the other guests will know exactly who it is. But if its a shared bathroom in the hallway, for example, its much easier for guests to be anonymous, leaving behind mess on the assumption that nobody would know it was them (except the poor sod who walks in straight after them).
Anyone else experienced this?

Definitely cleaner compared to dormitory type washrooms. Part of it is probably cleanliness that they know they will be using the facility again and also the thought that it is easier to get exposed if they make a mess due to limited number of suspects.

I'm of the same opinion :)

Ensuites DEFINITELY stay cleaner, no question, for all the reasons you listed.
The only real downside to ensuites is when you get that person who stays in the bathroom way too long.
I've found the best thing is to have ensuites, but then a few extra bathrooms in the hallway as backups.

Agree with this too. Our Ensuite is always cleaner. Mind you, the non-ensuite private toilet shower rooms are always cleaner than the communal ones that have multiple showers and toilets in them. Maybe it's also to do with the amount of use that they get.

I presume that it the reason.
It is definitely important to offer the possibility of using other showers/bathrooms outside of the en-suite rooms to avoid people being forced to wait, especially if it is an en-suite bathroom for a room with more than 3 or 4 people.

I find that ensuite dorm bathrooms are generally cleaner....
Unless the dorm is a female only dorm in which case it can get pretty disgusting. It seems to work better in mixed dorms, where there is a lot more consideration of other people.
Our private ensuite bathrooms are always kept really clean to be honest!

And ensuite bathroom is not only cleaner, less items and equipment are broken inside as well.
Maybe guests believe that there's more chance for us to catch them if they do anything bad in an ensuite bathroom...

As a hostel which offers surfing and other water sports, sand is obviously an issue. At AltaVista, our hosts check the main bathroom and all en-suite bathrooms every day, in case toilet paper has ran out etc. If we feel the bathroom needs cleaning, then it will be cleaned every day, if not, then every other day. Therefore, if others sharing the bathroom are unclean or messy, there is no problem! Here we feel cleanliness is very important, and we are often complimented on the cleanliness of our hostel!
