Dorm bed bookings down, private room bookings up
Looking over our stats for the last month, I notice our dorm bed bookings are really down - but private room bookings seem to be going up. I was expecting dorm beds to be more popular during the first half of this year due to the economic doom and gloom...but it seems people are more inclined to spend money on a private room in Shanghai.
I wondered if anyone else had noticed a similar trend?

Hard to generalise for the whole of Shanghai!
For us, this year our guests are mainly from the US, Mexico, Japan, Spain, France, Canada, Sweden, Malaysia and Singapore.

I just looked up general prices in Shanghai, and it looks like hostel private rooms in Shanghai are less expensive than dorm beds in Europe.
Wish I could go! :)

Here´s my theory.
It´s the same we´ve been dealing with for the apast months, which is:
Tourism is experiencing a lack of funds so people that went to a hotel are now choosing suites in hostels because they are cheaper...so then we have less backpacker material and more regular tourists...
Right?

Hi all, I'm from Singapore currently exploring the possibilities of opening a backpackers hostel. So I've been doing a bit of research recently.
I'm not sure for the respective countries you guys are in, however the backpackers industry seem to be on a decline, with more budget conscious travelers opting to stay at hotels giving big discounts.
My guess is the situation is the same in other countries as well?
Any opinions?
Anyway guess we'll have to rack our brains together to make people stay at backpackers hostels!:)

Hostels should push the social aspect. That's where they have an advantage over hotels, even when they are a similar price.

for solo travelers Hostel is really the only option. Hotels are more expensive and you cannot socialize. Everybody is just minding their own business. Some don't even reply the "good morning" you say to them during breakfast.
Now some hostels, especially the HI ones don't seem to nice for socializing. Big hostels are bad too generally.\
Best ones to socialize are small hostels, where everybody speaks to everybody.
