The end of Windows XP

Just came across this news item about the end of Windows XP.

If you want to grab a standalone copy of XP the last chance is on 30 June, but if you plan to order a new machine with XP pre-installed prepare to say your final farewell by this evening. Today’s deadline is due to Microsoft’s Windows life-cycle policy for the outgoing operating system.

What do you think of Vista?

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and just upgraded to the latest release 8.04 -- I'm happy with it.

Interesting that MS is continuing to allow XP to be used in the Micro laptop market - e.g Asus eee, Acer ASpire one etc. Seems to say it all to me. If there's functionality you need in vista that's missing in XP then go for vista, but it will use more resources. I use XP, I have tried Ubuntu, and like it, but at the moment can't get round to re-learning stuff. I guess that's the inertia factor that keeps MS going. Also I've had problems installing Ubuntu on some PCs, I think it is the way the hard disks are setup in the, but not sure.

I'd like to get an internet kiosk going on Linux of some form - seems a lot more secure than XP.

It took me a while using a dual-boot Windows/Linux machine before I could switch completely -- probably over a year, but I don't remember. The new version of Ubuntu installs from inside Windows like a regular program... I haven't tried that yet.

There is also a vmware converter to run Windows inside of Ubuntu...

Windows XP has officially reached end of life meaning you won't be able to get it, at least from Microsoft nearly seven years after its October 2001 release. The end had already been extended by six months by Microsoft, which had originally intended to retire it in January, one year after the release of Vista, its successor.But i now use windows xp .

Well, you can still ask for a downgrade though... If you are so unsatisfied with your Vista (as many I know), you can ask the technicians to have a downgrade version. As you bought the license, they will make you a cloned/burnt copy from their master cd, install it, put the key on which is assigned to you, and you can live happily ever after. If you ever lose the disc, you can even just download it from the Internet, as you have paid for the user key, not the software (?).

At least this is what I've read on an other forum talking about XP.

Good tip...

I was looking for a new laptop because I'm not sure how much longer this one will last. I was looking at a Thinkpad X series -- they're charging an extra $50 or $60 for the computer if you want to put XP on it instead of Vista. :confused:

I'm going to erase it and put Ubuntu Linux on it, but I like to have XP as a backup in case I need to run some Windows-only software...

What are your requirements?

I've got an HP 530 T2050... It has a Core Duo Intel Centrino (Celeron), max 2GB ram, 80GB HDD, wifi but no bluetooth ( :( ), DVD ram, a very nice, 15,4" screen (16:9) and a light weight... so far so good. The only downside I found so far, couldn't find an official driver for the agp texture accelerator*, but this would affect only games. If you are looking for a laptop to work (and play some non textured classic games like Starcraft or AoE when you are stressed out ;) ), IMHO it's worth for the price!

Many of us just unsure to use it due it requires more mindwork than for a regular windows user, also there are some compatibility issues... but anyone who uses it, recommend it a lot. I was thinking using Linux on the public terminals, but I'll need some ideas how to put Skype, IM and other softwares on it, also need complete drivers for the hardware.

*Update: I looked up on Intel's site and found the updated driver which fixes this feature. This new driver was not available on hp.com! :confused:

What are your requirements?

I'm looking for a superlight laptop with metal shell that is fast and runs Ubuntu :D

I'm so happy with my Thinkpad T43 that I'm going to get another Thinkpad for my next computer.

Check out the Thinkpad X61. It's so small it doesn't have a CD drive, but you can get it loaded with 160 GB HD, 3 GB RAM, and 4 year at-home repair plan for under $2000...

Ubuntu is great. If you are used to Windows it can take a little time to figure out how to configure and use Ubuntu. But I don't think it's harder than learning Mac or any new operating system.

Ubuntu comes with Pidgin, a free IM program that works with MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk, and many others, all at the same time. You can install Skype with a double-click.

Ubuntu usually has all the drivers. It depends on what hardware you have though (especially printers). If you type your computer model into Google with the keyword "ubuntu" you can often find blog post describing people's experiences running Ubuntu on that hardware.

I think Ubuntu would be perfect for guest computers because it doesn't have spyware/virus problems...
