Sun, wind and wave-powered: Europe unites to build renewable energy 'supergrid'
With a renewables supergrid, electricity can be supplied across the continent from wherever the wind is blowing, the sun is shining or the waves are crashing.
Connected to Norway's many hydro-electric power stations, it could act as a giant 30GW battery for Europe's clean energy, storing electricity when demand is low and be a major step towards a continent-wide supergrid that could link into the vast potential of solar power farms in North Africa.
There has been talk about this for quite a while - apparently things start to get moving now. Very good news.

I agree. It makes sense in every way.
But here we have reports that the local council in the Isle of Wight has voted against allowing wind turbines 'because it will spoil the landscape'. I gather a Danish company is manufacturing turbines right there, but they may take their whole manufacturing plant elsewhere now.

That´s such a silly argument, really. Climate change will spoil the landscape, too. The Dutch landscape would be totally spoiled by rising sea levels. :rolleyes:
Anyway, the good thing about the North Sea grid will be that huge arrays of wind turbines can be built offshore, where they don´t spoil the views of anyone.
