Hi guys, do you have any suggestions what to do about unfair competition i.e. hostel owners / managers making bookings in their own hostel via Hostel World or asking their family members to do so in order to boost their ratings? Of course they give themselves top 100% rating!
Unfortunately Hostel World doesn't seem to care as they're still getting the fee & 10% of each booking.

This is hostelworld's mistake, because the rating is not information, the rating is the base of choice of the accomodation. They should stop ranking under reviews. The same problem will be with hostelbookers ( little better may be)
Very interresting if you see , where is not so important the rating, ther is not so many cheating and all general rating is under 80%

hi euro, yes, of course he is an amateur. But the point is that he manages to fake the rating system on hostelworld and that's what customers pay attention to.hasta pronto...

What you told about same, this is sure running in Budapest.
My friend booked a room in a top hostel on hostelworld and it was soon cancelled, without any comments.

20 times 100% rating and 1 times 20% the avarage is 96%

That's right . I guess minimum 20 maximum 100-200 (no maximum:) ).

I dont know how the guests 'know' that they should give 100% and not 87 or 85%. I met lot of tourist who was so satisfied that it is impossibile to be more satisfied ( gave as a present a bottle of whisky, stayed as long as possibile, always mentioned that how good is the hostel) left a review with a very good text an 85%. This happened lot of time . How they know that only 100% worth something? If we see what hostelworld send it is not usual that people make no difference between Excellent an Very good.

That is why I'm a little bit skeptical. If just 10 hostels have to get 100 hundred reviews each, that's 1000 people writing fake reviews with their credit cards.
If 1000+ people are writing fake reviews, it should be easily detectable by the booking engines with just a little bit of effort.
It's easy to meet people at hostels, but to ask 100 people to use their credit card to pay for the bookings seems a little bit unlikely to me. If I were a backpacker and a hostel manager who I only knew through staying at their hostel for a few days asked me to waste my time making a fake review and putting several dollars charge on my credit card, I wouldn't do it.
If I were a backpacker who stayed at a hostel that was so much fun that I met the manager and got to know him well enough that he felt comfortable asking me to make fake reviews, he wouldn't even have to ask me for a fake review. I would probably give 100% without even asking. Once the guest feels like they are friends with the staff, they are more likely to give 100%.
If some hostels are cheating, it seems unlikely that this is the method.
