I'm a Canadian and I'd like to open a hostel outside of Canada. The two places that are of interest to me are France and Brazil.
Does anyone have any idea how difficult it would be as a Canadian, to immigrate to France to start a hostel? I understand that there are a few cities there that could use a couple more.
As far as Brazil goes, would that be considered a saturated market?

can you please email the comparative costs of real estate rentals or sales in Brazil and France? What about other costs like labor salaries, etc? I haven't been to both countries, but I am very interested by your interesting discussions here...

Hi, it's been mentioned about zoning laws in France being a potential problem.
I wonder if anyone could shed some more light on how much hassle there is with renovating/making amendments to an existing property in France regarding the law?
I'm also considering going down the road of buying a property and converting it into a hostel in France but at this stage of planning I'm a little naive to the legal side of things (The practical construction side of things is no issue to me though). Any imput would be really appreciated as I'd rather not spend years filling in forms and speaking to solicitors. I would probably look to set up in another country if that was the case.

In France, a hostel has to fullfill the fire hazard regulation just like a normal hotel; the disbled access has also to be granted for one or some rooms (depends of the total number of roms) and to all the common area, including parking, hall, kitchen... Think about parking, as zoning regulation often consider minimum parking. If you are in an architectural zone, you have to be very carefull about all the outside details. Finally, you can only open if a safety commission has visited and given a recommandation to the local mayor, who then can give the permission to start.
Go to the fire fighter officer, he will help you; go to the tourist office (from the département and the region), they will help you in your project and grant you subsidies (present your hostel as a "gîte d'étape"); and contact the mayor, it is much better if he supports the project !

France does not have many independent hostels, just 29 according to my research. This compares to 107 HI hostels. At just 2.1 hostels per million people they are the lowest in Europe. This compares with up to 45 hostels per million people in other countries.
Either the country is ripe for more independent hostels or there is some type of problem - regulation or demand for example. I think thorough research is necessary.

That's exactly what I am wondering about, hence my question.. I bet its more on the regulation/bureaucracy side.

There are no French hostels listed in the hostels directory on HM.
I would suggest contacting some of the independent hostels who can be found on HW and HB.
Please let us know what you find out.

Do you still have that list of 29hostels? I assume with HW, you mean hostel world? Difficulty there is you have to go through all the towns to see whether eventually they have a hostel.

Sorry, I did not make a list I just counted by going through each town and yes, it took many days to count the whole of Europe! A winter job when the hostel is closed.
If you put your cursor over any of the underlined acronyms you will see a little pop up box telling you the full name, try it.
